{"id":235,"date":"2013-12-04T21:12:02","date_gmt":"2013-12-04T21:12:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/friendsofkeneypark.us\/?page_id=235"},"modified":"2020-07-21T22:50:08","modified_gmt":"2020-07-21T22:50:08","slug":"overview","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/friendsofkeneypark.us\/?page_id=235","title":{"rendered":"Overview"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Friends of Keney Park, Inc., in Partnership with the City of Hartford, Keney Park Sustainability Project, State of Ct DEEP\u2019s Environmental Justice Program, Leadership Greater Hartford, Blue Hills Civic Association, Northeast NRZ, Upper Albany NRZ, Blue Hills Civic Association, Hartford Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission, CT State Museum of Natural History, Hartford Communities that Care, Family Day Enterprises Inc., PGA Connecticut, Blue Hills NRZ, Community Solutions, UCONN, Goodwin College, West Indian Cricket Task force, Ebony Horsewomen, Upper Albany Avenue Collaborative, Hartford Public Library, Voice of Women of Color ,Garden Club of Greater, and Waverley Little League, Hartford will develop an operation and maintenance plan in the City of Hartford for Keney Park.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Friends of Keney Park\u00a0is governed by a board\u00a0which is elected at the annual membership meeting. All members of the organization are allowed\u00a0to vote in the election. Board meetings are open to the\u00a0public. The\u00a0organization&#8217;s officers\u00a0consist\u00a0of President, Vice\u00a0President, Treasurer and\u00a0Secretary\u00a0to carry out day-to-day business.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0FOKP\u00a0has\u00a0worked\u00a0with federal, state and local\u00a0officials\u00a0to help obtain over\u00a0four million dollars\u00a0in grants for the physical\u00a0improvement of Keney\u00a0Park. The organization has also worked\u00a0with\u00a0city\u00a0officials\u00a0and\u00a0private\u00a0groups\u00a0to bring various activities\u00a0into the Park.<\/p>\n<p>Our goal is to develop,\u00a0maintain and\u00a0enhance\u00a0one of the nation&#8217;s\u00a0oldest\u00a0Parks as an (Urban Nature Center)\u00a0in the City\u00a0of Hartford. It will also provide\u00a0students and\u00a0residents within urban communities with a safe and nurturing learning environment that\u00a0will\u00a0help\u00a0achieve\u00a0their\u00a0full potential in the environmental education field.<\/p>\n<p>Keney\u00a0Park, composing 693 acres,\u00a0is one of the largest designed\u00a0landscapes in the United\u00a0States. An initial gift of 533 acres by investor and\u00a0wholesale grocer, Henry Keney to the City of Hartford\u00a0in 1894, it expanded the City&#8217;s\u00a0then emerging\u00a0park\u00a0system. Keney\u00a0Park was\u00a0designed\u00a0by\u00a0the landscape architectural firm of Olmsted, Olmsted and Eliot. It was deemed\u00a0ready\u00a0and\u00a0presentable\u00a0for transfer\u00a0to the City, as directed in Keney&#8217;s\u00a0will, on August 18, 1924.
